Orchids (Part 3)

Spathoglottis are terrestrial orchids and very easy to grow. As with all plants one must find the best situation for a plant to express most fully its silent aspiration. The ideal rule-of-thumb is 'A plant in the right place'.

A fertile, well-drained soil mix, the correct pot size (this is often a mistake some gardeners make), i.e. over potting a plant. I use the example of putting a young child in a bathtub vs. putting him in the ocean. Plants need to adapt slowly to their environment and moving a plant up in pot size when its roots fill out the existing container is best..

Mother has given Spathoglottisplicata two significances. The pure white is 'Integral Attachment to the Divine'.

Mother's comment:

'On the right way towards realisation.'

Mother tells us that the light mauve to deep violet form is 'Vital Attachment to the Divine' and she comments,

'Manifold and abundant in its multiplicity'.

Hybridizers in Thailand have created many new and beautiful colours including shades of yellow, orange.and more.

There are other beautiful species as well such as Spathoglottisparsonii (below), but we will concentrate on the two that Mother named.

In colder climates Spathoglottis require greenhouse conditions but in warm climates they can begrown in pots or directly in the ground. They are easy to bloom and require no special care, but a regular feeding with a good orchid fertilizer will bring out their best.
